365 project blog update

Visitors to my blog will notice that the home page is almost all posts from my 365 project, a photo project which challenges me to take a photo everyday. First, I’ve found it pretty difficult to take a photo everyday, especially in the winter where I am working indoors during all hours of daylight. There really are only so many photos I can take of my office, home, and commute. As a result, going through the motion of trying to post a photo each day to the blog helps motivate the daily photo taking. That said, all the 365 project posts drowned out the more meaningful posts of this blog. I have considered moving these post over to a tumblr blog, but that is just one more platform to deal with. So I’ve decided I’m going to keep posting the 365 project photos to this blog, however, they will be excluded from the home page and for the same reasons the photography category which is accessible from the “Photography” tab at the top of the page.

The 365 project post can be found by selecting the tumblelog tab at the top of the blog, the 365 project category on the right sidebar, and they will remain in the RSS feed. It will take some time to move all the posts over (as I can’t seem to find a way to easily batch remove categories from posts).

The blizzard of 2010 (aka Snowpocalypse 2010)

Over the weekend DC was hit by a massive blizzard dumping up to 30 inches of snow across the region (for those of you who don’t already know). I chose to stay warm indoors and not venture out in the blizzard or travel too far around the city. After the snow stopped falling on Saturday afternoon I ventured out around my neighborhood. Below is a slide show I snapped with my pocket camera as I and the neighborhood frolicked in all the new snow (lots of sledding). Nothing fancy or artistic.

365 project update

I’ve been on vacation for the last two plus weeks for the holidays and during that time I let my 365 project go by the wayside as well. I wanted to spend some quality time with my family and friends. I still managed to take a lot of pictures, especially with my new Cannon S90, but I really didn’t take pictures thinking about my 365 project not do I really feel like forcing one of these other photos into my 365 project (I’ll shortly be sharing a few of the slideshows of some of the interesting photos generated over my vacations). I did manage to take a few shots for my 365 and will be posting them later today. I will say, it was a nice break from making sure I got a shot everyday, but now I ready to start off the New Year trying to ensure I get my daily shot.

365 project update – looking for daily upload tips.

Lately I’ve been pretty bad about not only posting photos from my 365 but also taking the photos. So I’m trying to think of some ways to speed up my posting and enable quicker shots, even with a hectic schedule.

I think my first goal will be to try daily posting of shots, hoping that will keep me more up-to-date.  Starting today you should be seeing a post for each day, come up (there is some backlog to get through over the next few days).

However, I do find it to be a time-consuming process to complete the work-flow of uploading photos into Aperture, processing, and then to the web.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to create a more efficient work-flow?

Starting my 365 project

As I’ve been getting back into photography over the last year one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is actually getting out to shoot. All too often I’m doing something else and taking photographs slips to the back burner. A few days ago I came across Shawn’s post about starting a 365 project (which essentially is a challenge to take at least one photograph everyday for 365 days) that is limited to shots taken with a 50mm lens.

I do like the 50mm lens, I feel it makes the photographer move to compose the frame. However, seeing as how I’m still working back into shooting I’ve decided to be a little less restrictive with my 365 project (come on 365 days is a long time!) in hopes that by providing myself the flexibility to use other lenses and cameras I can improve my overall skill.

Roosevelt Island

The other weekend I took a stroll over to Theodore Roosevelt Island for a leisurely weekend walk with the new toy I picked up, a Canon 24-105 f/4L IS,  and managed to snap a few shots. While I attempted some in HDR, I once again was reminded that I should always use a tripod. Click below for the slide show of the set.

DC Night photowalk

A wile back I took a night photo walk around the Lincoln monument area of Washington DC. It was still winter in my book, so it was quite cold and even though I ended up not feeling well for the next few days I managed to get a few decent shots of the monuments and some night vistas. On many of the images I processed into HDR. Click below for the slide show.

Random travel photos

I end up traveling a fair amount for work and occasionally end up with loose photos ranging from the one off shot to mobile uploads. These shots documenting the rare glimmer of something-or-another are forever immortalized in this flickr set. Click the image below for the ever updating captures.
